About Simian Mountain National Nature Reserve

Simian Mountain National Nature Reserve is located in the southwest region of Chongqing Municipality, China. Distinguished by its expansive karst topography, the reserve features steep limestone cliffs, deep caves, and iconic waterfalls, such as the scenic Tenglong and Xianren Falls. The area covers a mountainous terrain marked by elevation differences that foster diverse ecological zones, ranging from subtropical forests at lower altitudes to mixed evergreen broadleaf forests higher up. This biodiversity hotspot supports numerous rare and endemic plant and animal species, including protected species like the clouded leopard and various bird species, making it a vital conservation area. Historically, the region served as a refuge for ancient human settlements and still retains cultural significance tied to local ethnic minorities. Recreationally, visitors are drawn to the reserve's well-maintained hiking trails that traverse through dense forests, past caves, and overlook breathtaking vistas. The fresh mountain air and pristine waters also make it an ideal spot for wildlife watching, photography, and eco-tourism. Key landmarks include the Longshuixia Canyon, the Tenglong Waterfall (one of the tallest in China), and the extensive cave systems like Longshiya Cave.
